Whiskey (or whisky, depending on where you’re from) is more than just a drink—it’s a whole experience. At P.J. Clarke’s, we get it. With so many types of whiskey out there, it can feel overwhelming, but don’t worry, we’re going to break it down for you. Let’s dive into what makes it so special, and how you can explore some of the best options right here on our menu in Philadelphia.
Whiskey or Whisky?
What Gives This Drink Its Unique Flavor?
The Four Main Types of Whiskey
Here are the big four whiskey categories that every fan should know:
- Bourbon: Bourbon is made mostly from corn and is aged in new charred oak barrels, which gives it that signature sweet, caramel-like flavor. If you’re a bourbon lover, you’ve got to try Woodford Reserve from Woodford County, KY. It’s got that perfect balance—smooth with hints of citrus and cocoa.
- Rye Whiskey: If you like a little more spice in your whiskey, rye’s the way to go. It’s made with at least 51% rye and has a slightly peppery kick. Our local favorite, Dad’s Hat from Bristol, PA, is a must-try. It’s got sweet grain notes, minty herbs, and a vanilla caramel finish that’s seriously good.
- Scotch Whisky: Since this is from Scotland, Scotch is technically a whisky and not a whiskey. Still, it deserves a place on the list! A great example is the Johnnie Walker Blue Label from Kilmarnock, Scotland—a luxurious blend with a balanced flavor profile and subtle notes of dark chocolate, smoke, and honeyed vanilla.
- Irish Whiskey: Looking for something a little lighter and smoother? Irish whiskey is triple-distilled, which makes it super smooth with a mellow, fruity flavor. It’s less smoky than Scotch and really easy to sip.
